Introduction

Discovered in 1818, Hydrogen Peroxide use has become a staple in households around the world. The familiar brown bottle can be found nearly everywhere and used for everything from wound care to plant growth.

The most common versions sold over the counter is the 3% solution for household use and a 6% to 10% used in some hair coloring products. Higher concentrations of food-grade 35% and industrial 90% are also available but require special care and handling. Always remember hydrogen peroxide is not safe to be ingested, and high concentrations should be handled carefully and with appropriate protective equipment.

The signature “fizz” means it’s still working, but if you don’t see that, it does not mean it has gone bad. The dark brown color of the bottle keeps light from entering and causing it to break down. While hydrogen peroxide is light sensitive, its is not as sensitive as people think. It is particularly sensitive to direct sunlight, specifically UV Rays. Room light will do little to no damage to the peroxide. Be sure to store it in a cool, dark, dry place, and it is best in the first few months after it’s been opened if it is a lower strength solution like 3%.

Hydrogen peroxide is a staple in almost every home first aid kit. While this product kills germs and protects your body from infections, its use spans far deeper than cleaning scraped knees. This common household product can be used for anything from whitening your teeth to cleaning stains out of clothes. Continue to explore several surprising uses from this simple water and oxygen compound.

Realize it or not, Hydrogen Peroxide – H2O2 – is one of the most versatile products to have in the home. It has a multitude of uses for maintaining personal health and beauty and is handy to have available for cleaning and even cooking.

Note

In 1928, Richard Simmons, M.D., hypothesized that colds and flu viruses enter through the ear canal and not through the nose or mouth as most have believed. This is largely due to the presence of Interferon and Immunoglobulin A in the mucous of the eyes, nose and throat that act as a barrier and prevent germs and viruses from entering the body. The ear canals do not have this sort of protection. Once the virus has entered the middle ear, it begins the breeding process, and from there has access to every avenue throughout the body to spread the infection and make us sick.

The American Medical Association ignored or suppressed this information and ridiculed Dr. Simmons.

The medical community has also largely dismissed this research.

Remarkable results can be achieved in curing colds and the flu within 12-14 hours using just a few drops of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) in each ear. The H2O2 starts working immediately in killing the cold or flu. There will be some bubbling and, in some cases, mild stinging might occur.

Once all the bubbling subsides – usually a few minutes – drain onto a tissue and repeat with the other ear. It is very important to treat both ears and to treat 3 times the first day, at least twice the second day, and 1 time per day for a couple of days after you feel you are completely recovered.

Although this practice is perfectly safe for infants and children, the loud bubbling and stinging may frighten them, so they will need someone they trust to put the hydrogen peroxide in their ears. I also advise trying it on yourself before you dose your child so you’ll know what they are experiencing. A less stressful alternative for children is Nutra-Biotic Ear Drops (grapefruit seed extract and vegetable glycerine). These drops are easily tolerated by children (although there can be some stinging).

Hydrogen peroxide and/or Nutra-Biotic Ear Drops are more effective than antibiotics for all ear infections. A Mayo Clinic study found 96% of all ear infections in children are yeast based and not bacteria, hence antibiotics are completely inappropriate and ineffective. Giving antibiotics for yeast-based ear infections actually increases the incidence and severity of ear infections.

Remember, 8 out of 10 times when you have a cold or flu, this is the only therapy needed. Those are a lot better statistics than antivirals, antibiotics and vaccines pushed by conventional medicine and without any of the side effects. You’ve got nothing to lose and speedy recovery to good health by trying Dr. Simmons flu therapy.

You can have remarkable results in curing the cold and flu within 12 to 14 hours when administering a few drops of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) into each ear.”

Hydrogen Peroxide (H202) is a safe, all natural way to fight infection and disable bacteria to neutralize germs. This is why it is used to treat a wide variety of common illnesses.

In 1938, German researchers had great success using hydrogen peroxide for treating colds and the flu. But their data has been ignored for over 60 years. Hydrogen peroxide has a wide spectrum of antibacterial and viral activity, thus it can kill the common cold and flu viruses upon contact.

NOTE: Clear the Air – Remove Airborne Germs from Your Home to prevent colds and flu

Place 1 pint of 3% hydrogen peroxide for every gallon of water within your humidifier. Allow the humidifier to continuously run. The anti-bacterial and disinfecting properties of hydrogen peroxide gently infiltrate the room to prevent airborne germs from infiltrating your home

Note: This is an excellent way to prevent colds and other sicknesses from lingering in your home or office.

Flu and Cold, SARS-CoV-2 Hydrogen Peroxide Remedy

UPDATE: 2/17/2022 - DAY 3

I am happy to report again that for the third night in a row as a result of putting 3 squirts on the end of a q tip of hydrogen Peroxide (3% H2O2) in my nose before bed I was able to breathe even better than the night before, but I was able to fall slept right away again, and I also slept all through the night again and did not wake up once. I also felt better when I woke up, I did not have as much pain, and I was able to get out of bed easier.

The five increased benefits I have noticed over the last 3 days from using hydrogen peroxide in my nose before bed and when I wake up in the morning.

1. I can breathe much better and much easier without restriction.

2. I fall asleep quicker, and I am sleeping through the night without waking up, as a result I'm getting better and more quality sleep.

3. I can get out of bed easier and I have a lot less pain.

4. My energy level it's much better, and I do not get drowsy during the day.

5. My focus, mindset, memory, my mood, and my attitude has been highly increased in a positive manner.

I also put some hydrogen Peroxide (3% H2O2) in both of my ears before bed, 3 squirts on the end of a q tip, to help prevent viruses and sickness as the hydrogen Peroxide will kill bacteria and viruses.

I am not sure if putting 3 squirts on the end of a q tip of hydrogen Peroxide (3% H2O2) in my nose before bed had a direct connection to having less pain or if it was the result of sleeping all the way through the night and getting better and more quality sleep as a result. I am also feeling better throughout the day, and I have more energy than I did before I started putting hydrogen Peroxide (3% H2O2) in my nose.

I also put some hydrogen Peroxide (3% H2O2) in both of my ears before bed, 3 squirts on the end of a q tip, to help prevent viruses and sickness as the hydrogen Peroxide will kill bacteria and viruses.

Preventing and curing the Common Cold/Flu and SARS-CoV-2 With Hydrogen Peroxide

Cold and flu viruses enter the body through the ear canal. And 3% hydrogen peroxide solution (found at any drug store and sells for less than two dollars) is incredibly effective at killing bacteria and viruses.

I have used this treatment several times and I can tell you it works if you start the treatment early enough.:

It is important to begin treatment as soon as symptoms appear. If treatment is started promptly, effectiveness seems to be in the 80% range.

We have found remarkable results in curing the flu & cold within 12 to 14 hours when administering a few drops of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) into each ear. The H2O2 starts working within 2 to 3 minutes in killing the flu or cold; there will be some bubbling and in some cases mild stinging occurs.

Wait until the bubbling & stinging subside (usually 5 to 10 min) then drain onto tissue and repeat other ear. A bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide in 3% solution is available at any drug store for a couple of dollars.

Although this method is perfectly safe for infant/children to use, the loud bubbling and stinging frightens them, they'll need someone they trust to put the H2O2 in their ears. (don't get h2o2 in the eyes- if you do, flush with water)

Abstract

We reviewed the literature concerning the innate response from nasal and oral epithelial cells and their reaction to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Hydrogen peroxide is produced physiologically by oral bacteria and plays a significant role in the balance of oral microecology since it is an important antimicrobial agent. In the epithelial cells, the enzyme superoxide dismutase catalyzes a reaction leading from hydrogen peroxide to the ion superoxide. The induced oxidative stress stimulates a local innate response via activation of the toll-like receptors and the NF-κB. Those kinds of reactions are also activated by viral infections. Virus-induced oxidative stress plays an important role in the regulation of the host immune system and the specific oxidant-sensitive pathway is one of the effective strategies against viral infections. Therefore, nose/mouth/throat washing with hydrogen peroxide may enhance those local innate responses to viral infections and help protect against the current coronavirus pandemic. We strongly encourage the rapid development of randomized controlled trials in both SARS-CoV-2 positive and negative subjects to test the preliminary findings from the in-vitro and in-vivo observational studies that we identified.

Introduction

The SARS-CoV-2 virus outbreak appears to be characterized by respiratory transmission and respiratory infection, although the routes of transmission and the pathophysiology of the disease have not been fully clarified yet. However, it is proven that the virus resides in the nasal and oral mucosa.

While impeding person-to-person transmission is key to limiting the outbreak, so far little importance has been given to the events taking place after a transmission has happened, when innate immunity plays a crucial role. The main purpose of the innate immune response is to immediately prevent the spread and movement of foreign pathogens throughout the body. There is a close interplay between innate immunity and oxidative stress, and the molecule hydrogen peroxide may play a central role.

We reviewed the literature concerning the innate response from nasal and oral epithelial cells to evaluate the role of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2).

-

Methods

We searched the databases EMBASE and PubMed for relevant papers using the following entry terms: (“hydrogen peroxide” OR H2O2) AND (virus OR viral infection OR innate response). We have not used any other constrains. After duplicates were removed, we identified 2119 papers. Two independent observers scrutinized those articles in their titles and abstracts to apply eligibility criteria and filter the relevant ones. Disagreements were resolved by discussion. We defined the eligibility criteria using a PICO model as follows. Population: no specific reference population. Intervention: administration of hydrogen peroxide within clinical studies or animal studies or in-vitro studies. Comparison: placebo controlled or intra-individual pre-post comparison. Outcome: duration of current viral infection or protection against viral infections or enhancement of innate immunity reactions. All references from all eligible articles were assessed for eligibility, with no success. Finally, the papers were read, criticized, and narratively summarized. Fig. 1 shows a flow chart of the literature screening method used.

Results

26 Papers resulted eligible for review (Figure 1), none of which was a randomized controlled trial or a clinical observational study with a control group.

Hydrogen peroxide is produced physiologically by oral bacteria and plays a significant role in the balance of oral microecology since it is an important antimicrobial agent [3]. In the epithelial cells, the enzyme superoxide dismutase catalyzes a reaction leading from hydrogen peroxide to the ion superoxide. The induced oxidative stress stimulates a local innate response via activation of the toll-like receptors and the NF-κB [4]. Those kinds of reactions are also activated by viral infections [5]. Virus-induced oxidative stress plays an important role in the regulation of the host immune system and the specific oxidant-sensitive pathway is one of the effective strategies against viral infections.

Many viruses have been found to be sensitive to hydrogen peroxide, including swine flu, rubella, rabies, and others.

We therefore hypothesize that nose and mouth washing with hydrogen peroxide may enhance those local innate responses to viral infections and help protect against viral infections, including the current coronavirus pandemic.

Moreover, a hydrogen peroxide solution of a concentration as little as 0.5% efficiently inactivates coronaviruses (e.g. SARS, MERS) on inanimate surfaces within 1 min. This may justify the use of hydrogen peroxide washes in infected people too: the solution may decrease the viral load of their respiratory droplets, hence help tackle the spread in the community.

In the British Nationally Formulary, H2O2 is indicated for oral hygiene at the concentration of 6%. Hydrogen peroxide is safe to use for gargling or as a nasal spray or in the ears: its 3% solution is commonly used off-label in otolaryngology to treat many viral conditions, and moderate concentrations are present in drinks including tea and instant coffee.

-

Conclusions

There are no trials or clinical observational studies concerning the curative or preventive effect of hydrogen peroxide against viral infections. However, the literature from in-vitro immunological studies clearly points out that the application of hydrogen peroxide on the epithelial cells of nose, throat in the mouth and in the ears is extremely effective against viruses, including coronaviruses. We strongly encourage the rapid development of trials in both SARS-CoV-2 positive and negative subjects to study the effects that we have mention. Those trials would be inexpensive to implement and compatible with other ongoing trials. Positive results would lead to remarkable global health gain with extremely limited costs. As a starting dose to test, we propose two puffs (about 0.28 ml) of 1.5% H2O2 hydrogen peroxide nasal spray into each nostril two times daily combined with a mouth wash and gargling for 1 min with a 3% H2O2 hydrogen peroxide solution two times daily and 3 drops of 3% H2O2 hydrogen peroxide in your ears via q tip two times daily.

Hydrogen Peroxide as an Adjuvant Therapy for COVID-19: A Case Series of Patients and Caregivers in the Mexico City Metropolitan Area.

Abstract

Knowledge of the antiseptic effects of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) dates back to the late 19th century, and its mechanisms of action has been amply described. Globally, many physicians have reported using H2O2 successfully, in different modalities, against COVID-19. Given its anti-infective and oxygenating properties, hydrogen peroxide may offer prophylactic and therapeutic applications for responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. We report a consecutive case series of twenty-three COVID-19 patients (of 36 initially enrolled) who had been diagnosed by their primary care physician (mean age: 39, range: 8 months–70 years; 74% male) and twenty-eight caregivers in the Mexico City Metropolitan Area who received a complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) telemedicine treatment with H2O2 taken by mouth (PO, at a concentration of 0.06%), oral rinse (mouthwash, 1.5%), and/or nebulization (0.2%). We describe the treatment program and report the response of the COVID-19 patients and their caregivers. The patients mainly recovered well, reporting feeling “completely better” at 9.5 days on average. Two (9%) were hospitalized prior to joining the study, and one did not fully recover. Patients frequently reported nausea and sometimes dizziness or vomiting related to the oral treatment. None of the twenty-eight caregivers in close contact with the patients reported contracting COVID-19. Given its low cost and medical potential and considering its relative safety if used properly, we suggest that randomized controlled trials should be conducted. These should include both SARS-CoV-2-positive and SARS-CoV-2-negative participants, with single or combined modes of administration of H2O2, to study the benefits of this simple molecule and offer safe guidance regarding its use by health professionals.

1. Introduction

A case series is described on twenty-three ambulatory patients diagnosed with COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) and monitored by telemedicine, using an adjuvant therapy of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), administered PO (per orem), by mouth rinses (oral gargles), and by inhalation routes. We report the clinical outcomes of the consecutive COVID-19 patients and their caregivers, who were treated by our medical team between May 11 and July 19, 2020.

Among other things, the team conducted a nonexhaustive review of the scientific literature to identify possible therapeutic and prophylactic alternatives. This review was supplemented by literature from the complementary, traditional, and integrative medicine fields. Our aim was to identify nonstandard therapeutic alternatives for treating viral infections, such as COVID-19, that could be easily and cheaply attained in Mexico over the counter and aid in the primary health response to the pandemic. With these requisites in mind, we identified this clinically useful molecule, hydrogen peroxide.

Dating back to 1888, Love et al. reported the use of hydrogen peroxide as an anti-infectious agent and described it as effective in treating numerous diseases including scarlet fever, diphtheria, runny nose, coryza, whooping cough, asthma, hay fever, and tonsillitis. Specifically for viral diseases that attack the respiratory system, the first reported medical success using hydrogen peroxide therapy dates back over 100 years, when doctors Oliver and Murphy reported in The Lancet how they had successfully applied intravenous hydrogen peroxide to treat a group of patients with influenza; they reduced by half the mortality among this group of patients, which consisted of troops from the Indian army during the 1918-1919 Spanish Flu pandemic in the Mesopotamian valley.

Although the use of hydrogen peroxide therapeutically has generated great controversy in alternative medicine [3], this ubiquitous molecule is not just one of the many components that help regulate the amount of oxygen that reaches cells, but its presence is vital for a variety of other functions of the body. Many positive effects of hydrogen peroxide on the immune system response have been described, including the stimulation of monocytes and T-helper cells which help fight infections, the increased production of interferon-gamma, which has a role in immunoregulation, and the effect of decreasing the activity of B cells, which have a role in up-regulating the inflammatory response [4].

Known in medical terms as oxidative therapy or bio-oxidative therapy, hydrogen peroxide is a simple, well-studied, and useful molecule for a range of medical and sanitary applications. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) contains one more atom of oxygen than water (H2O) and is naturally produced in the human organism as a by-product of oxygen metabolism. It is metabolized by enzymes known as peroxidases and catalases, which decompose low concentrations of hydrogen peroxide into water and a free oxygen ion. “Hydrogen peroxide appears to be a ubiquitous molecule. We exhale it, excrete it and take it in from diet” [4]. It is produced endogenously for many functions of living organisms, and there is an abundance of scientific knowledge on this molecule, with sufficient documentation on its uses for sanitation, sterilization, and, importantly, diverse therapeutic modalities.

Given that the H2O2 molecule decomposes into water (H2O) and oxygen (O−), in appropriate doses, it is relatively safe for animal and human uses, as well as relatively nontoxic. In the late 1980s, Farr reported that hydrogen peroxide offers therapeutic benefits by directly destroying microorganisms through dual oxidative and oxygenating actions, caused by the released oxygen molecules [5, 6]. In more recent times, hydrogen peroxide has been widely hailed for use in the so-called “oxygenation therapy” in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), several types of cancer, heart and blood vessel diseases, immune disorders, infectious or pulmonary diseases, and many other ailments and conditions.

H2O2 has also been used in dentistry, alone or combined with other salts, since the start of the century [7, 8]. In a recent review, Marshall, Cancro, and Fischman have described scarce side effects on soft tissues after using 1%–1.5% H2O2 as a daily rinse, with over two years of follow-up. They report an in vitro study that found that 3% H2O2 effectively inactivated many virus types, discovering that “coronaviruses and influenza viruses were the most sensitive” [8]. They further state that “since SARS-CoV-2 is vulnerable to oxidation, preprocedural mouth rinses containing oxidative agents such as 1% H2O2 have been suggested to reduce the salivary viral load” [8].

Brownstein et al. from Wayne State University School of Medicine, who has been applying oxidative therapies for over two decades, recently reported a novel treatment program combining nutritional and oxidative therapies against COVID-19. They used hydrogen peroxide to successfully treat the signs and symptoms of patients diagnosed with COVID-19 [9]. They base their treatments on a combination of oral, intravenous, intramuscular, and nebulized hydrogen peroxide. Their approach has resulted in zero deaths and the recovery of 107 COVID-19 patients [9].

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other official health agencies have also approved the use of hydrogen peroxide as a disinfectant for medical equipment and facilities that have been in contact with the SARS-CoV-2 [10]. In vitro studies demonstrate the efficacy of H2O2 in the vapor phase as a viricide against pathogenic viruses such as SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV [11]. Other studies, regarding viral inactivation in surfaces using diverse disinfectants, including hydrogen peroxide, have also been reported [12, 13].

Recently, the medical hypothesis that hydrogen peroxide is effective against the COVID-19 coronavirus, as well as other viral pathogens and bacteria, has been further advanced [14, 15]. Caruso et al. on the front lines against the COVID-19 outbreaks in Naples, Italy, recommend the need for clinical protocols and research on oxidative therapies regarding COVID-19 [14]. After review of the literature, they propose that the application of hydrogen peroxide to the epithelial cells of the nose, mouth, and throat could well be “extremely effective” against viruses, including SARS-CoV-2 [15]. Gansky’s clinical trial at UCSF titled “Effect of antiseptic mouthwash/gargling solutions and pre-procedural rinse on SARS-CoV-2 load” is another example of current research on the subject [16].

The Italian group further proposes that a COVID-19 disinfection regimen by gargling with hydrogen peroxide through mouth rinses (and gargles), two to three times a day, could be useful for the disinfection of COVID-19 from the oral cavity. They also recommended nasal washes with a peroxide nebulizer two times a day. In their opinion, “the effectiveness of hydrogen peroxide-based therapeutic regimen would be verifiable by a significant reduction in the rate of hospitalizations and respiratory complications in patients positive to SARS-CoV-2” [14, 15]. Gansky's clinical trial at UCSF titled “Effect of antiseptic mouthwash/gargling solutions and pre-procedural rinse on SARS-CoV-2 load” is another example of current research on the subject [32].

A further example is Khan et al.’s clinical trial of gargling agents in reducing intraoral viral load among COVID-19 patients based in Pakistan [17]. This quadruple blind trial provides useful information because it is randomized and controlled, and one of their treatments is a 1% hydrogen peroxide gargle. The study design, which includes patients in parallel groups, using diverse types of gargles and nasal lavages, has as outcome measure the intraoral viral load of SARS-CoV-2, and their results will test the hypothesis of H2O2’s usefulness for handling the current pandemic, especially in overburdened areas currently suffering consecutive waves of COVID-19 transmission.

Given the public health emergency facing Mexico and what ethics mandate from us as physicians, being aware of the increased demand expected for healthcare services in Mexico [18], as well as the absence of effective and approved therapeutic regimens, we hypothesized that hydrogen peroxide, an antiseptic agent, could play a pivotal role in reducing the severity and duration of the illness in patients and also preventing transmission among caregivers and close contacts. We therefore provided ambulatory treatment using hydrogen peroxide as a complementary therapeutic alternative for twenty-three COVID-19 patients. This treatment was extended in a prophylactic modality to twenty-eight caregivers or persons in close contact with the patients.

Here, we present a case series with our findings and provide some insight and recommendations, which could be useful to the scientific community as an adjuvant treatment during the pandemic’s evolution as it affects different countries.
